TOEFL/IELTS Scores

English language proficiency is vital to your success in the online MHA program. All applicants whose first language is not English or did not receive a bachelor’s degree in an Anglophone country are required to certify proficiency in English when you apply to UCLA by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) exam. This applies to U.S. citizens and permanent residents as well as international applicants. TOEFL or IELTS scores may be submitted as part of the online application or sent by the testing service directly to the MHA program office. For the TOEFL, please list the TOEFL institution code for UCLA 4837.

UCLA only accepts the TOEFL iBT. We do not currently accept MyBest TOEFL scores or TOEFL Essentials Exam scores. The minimum required score on the paper and pencil test must be at least 560 or at least 87 on the internet-based test. For the internet-based TOEFL (TOEFL iBT), the following are the expected scores for each section:

  • Writing – 25
  • Speaking – 24
  • Reading – 21
  • Listening – 17

*Please note that these expected section scores help you judge your English language ability in different areas.

The minimum required overall score on the IELTS should be at least 7.0.

*If you were enrolled in a hybrid/satellite program you are still required to take the TOEFL or IELTS. The requirement is waived only if you were physically present on the U.S. campus for two or more years. If less than 2 years, the TOEFL or IELTS is required.

TOEFL/IELTS Exemption

Exemptions from both the TOEFL/IELTS requirement can be granted if you meet either of the following criteria:

  • have a bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited university located in the United States or in another country in which English is both the primary spoken language of daily life (e.g., Australia, Barbados, Canada, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, United Kingdom).

– OR –

  • have completed at least two years of full-time study at such institutions.

Transcripts

When completing the online application, international applicants should upload unofficial transcripts from all academic institutions attended, additionally, when applicable mark sheets, diplomas in original language and authorized English translation, transcripts in original language and authorized English translation.

To apply to UCLA, applicants must submit official academic records. These are defined as original documents issued by the institution — not photocopies — which bear the registrar’s signature and the seal of the issuing institution. Instructions and deadlines for submission are included with official offers of admission. New graduate students should submit official records in the original language with a complete, authorized English translation from the university that issued the degree.

If you have attended more than one institution, each one should submit separate official records.

Please note submitted records become the university’s property, and we cannot return them to you. If your academic record cannot be replaced, keep the original for yourself and obtain a certified copy. Never send a document to UCLA that cannot be replaced.
